Companies from various sectors have opted for the circular economy, giving new uses to recyclable packaging in the production of clothing, footwear, household goods or the construction sector. However, are they actually generating a strong impact or are they efforts? with a purpose, above all, of marketing?
The sporting goods company Adidas has just launched its Run For The Oceans 2019 campaign for the second consecutive year, with which it invites the public to do sports for a social cause because for every kilometer traveled per person, the brand will donate one dollar to the Ocean program. Plastic, focused on collecting PET and converting it into tennis shoes and sports clothing.
In an interview with ExpokNews, Luis Fabián, Brand France Mobile Number List Communications Manager of Adidas in Mexico, indicated that in 2018 this project made it possible to manufacture 5 million pairs of tennis shoes that had a percentage of PET plastic in their soles and strings.
What percentage of recovered PET did these products include? There's no answer.
He noted that the percentages or figures on the environmental benefit generated by this type of efforts are “diverse” and recalled that in the last four years they have recycled and processed 200 million PET bottles for the production of sports accessories.
He said he did not have on hand what percentage of the global production of sneakers or t-shirts that the brand manufactures has any sustainable quality or how much “green” products represent in the sale of inputs of this corporation.
He also clarified that the direct environmental impact of their efforts to recover and recycle PET does not occur in Mexico, since they have focused on plastic collection actions in the Maldives, a peninsular country, where the environmental organization Parley for the Oceans is located. , social organization in charge of coordinating this project.
“It doesn't matter where PET recycling is done, the point is to appreciate that with sport you can modify lives with a global vision of environmental matters,” he added.
A more commercial strategy?
The manager of the sports brand pointed out that "these products have had a great reception among users despite the fact that a few years ago they were highly criticized for the Real Madrid and Bayern Munich shirts that, being made of recycled polyester, were rejected, but in the end they were accepted. in many nations and became an essential link to replicate these initiatives.”
At this event, the range of Alphabounce + Parley products was presented , clothing and tennis shoes that are made from plastic waste that “were transformed into a thread, to give greater comfort and support to the garment, thanks to a sealed lacing system and an optimized fit. to offer greater performance in a more sustainable way.”
He recalled that in 2015 an experimental pilot was carried out with the design of 50 pairs of tennis shoes with PET; In 2016, the goal reached 10 thousand pairs that were made from 50% recycled PET and the Bayer Munich and Real Madrid jerseys were launched with recycled polyester; In 2017 they made one million tennis shoes with PET, and in 2018 the Miami Hurricanes, of American college football in the United States, used a jersey 100% made of recycled PET in addition to manufacturing 5 million pairs of shoes; Finally, in 2019, they plan to manufacture 11 million tennis shoes that use PET.
By 2024, the brand aimed to reach 100% of its products with some use of recycled plastic or polyester.
It is worth mentioning that Parley for the Oceans has impacted more than 100,000 young people and their families who live in coastal areas affected by plastic pollution and who are now part of the Parley Ocean School program.
Thanks to this campaign of running for a cause, the Parley youth activist platform will be created, where they will manage tutorials and online courses on environmental issues.
